About Me

Hi World!

I am Cynthia starkweather-nelson

My love of place and current work focus on the diverse eco-systems of the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, temperate rainforests in Washington State, and lakes and prairies in northern Wisconsin, realized in acrylic paintings, prints and drawings.

I find unlimited beauty in these diverse landscapes.  My paintings highlight what I find.   Capturing how light affects the forms and shapes in nature is important in the paintings.  Is the form reflective or absorptive of the light?  Reflections and shadows define the specific structures.   Finding ways to express the depth, the presence or absence of water, and the relationships of color is key in the paintings.

. Born in Moline, IL I received a BFA in painting and drawing from Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, IL) followed by an MFA in printmaking at the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis, MN).  Upon graduation I was employed as the intaglio printer with Vermillion Editions in Minneapolis.  I had a successful twenty-year connection with the Peter M. David Gallery, Minneapolis, MN.

Currently I have studios in Tucson, AZ and Northern WI dividing my time between both environments.  Family in Washington State gives me time to enjoy and explore the lush environments found there.

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.

Inspiration

The visual impact of the environments I work from is fleeting, and breathtaking.  I strive to capture those moments in my work...being aware of space, place and time.

Techniques

My work is developed with water-based media such as acrylic paint, water color, water based printing ink and drawing on canvas or paper. Currently I use glazing mediums to allow the layering of color and texture and the build up of surfaces.

career highlights

I have been exhibiting my works of art since the early 1980's.  A major highlight was a one woman show in American Gallery, Bern, Switzerland in 1981!

Other highlights are:  "New American Paperworks" 1982 -86, a Smithsonian traveling invitational exhibition.  1986, "National Exhibition of Contemporary Women Artists", WARM Gallery, Mpls., MN,  1990, "One Person Show", Peter M. David Gallery, Mpls., MN  2008 Arrowhead Biennial Exhibition, Duluth Art Institute, Duluth, MN, 2013, Water Works, juried exhibit, Duluth Art Institute, Duluth, MN 2019, 1Art Gallery, Tucson, AZ,
